Done on Birch bark, instead of paper,
using gouache as writing fluid. I was expecially happy with the painting
of the elk, but had problems with the calligraphy. The nib kept clogging
and I couldn't use any lines on the bark, so had to use one of those brown
plastic reflection liners. Every time I moved my head I got a different
place for the lines, most frustrating.
original size: 5" x 7" (but matted
in an 11" x 14" frame)

This piece was done on Oriental Rice
Paper with stick ink for writing medium. The leaves are actual Maple
leaves from my back yard, sprayed with Blair Fixative. I gave this
one as a gift to a visiting Japanese woman in 2000. She gave me two
lovely Haiku poetry paintings that she did while here.

This is done on vellum (or lamb parchment)
using stick ink for writing medium. This piece, and the two previous
pieces were done for a special showing in Austria of mundane calligraphy
class projects.
The class was taught by Reggie Ezell in Indianapolis, Indiana (part
of his year-long class program).

This piece was done on commercially
purchased tobacco stained paper, using leaves from my trees. The
writing medium was Forest Green stick ink from Boku Uno. This was
also as a part of the Reggie Ezell class in Indianpolis.
original size: 20" x 25"

This piece was done on paper I made
during one of our class periods in the Reggie Ezell class in Indianapolis.
The background is also from one of our class sessions, done using
transparent inks and saran wrap. Writing medium was the same on this
as I used on the October Days piece.

This piece was done on some Canson
paper found at a relative's house. The feather is from a Canada Goose
found in Wisconsin by my father, and is raised from the surface with a piece
of styrofoam. The technique on this was "resist." all the lettering
was either filled in with the resist or left open, then the color wash
applied. This was done for Reggie Ezell's class in South Bend.

This piece was done using a wash technique
on paper for the black of space, and using an old toothbrush to spackle
in the "stars" of the universe. The writing medium I used was Permanent
White gouache (Winsor & Newton). This was also done for Reggie
Ezell's class in Indianapolis.

This piece was done as a special door
prize at Grissom AFB before it realigned. I painted a KC-135 in the
clouds inside the historiated capitol letter.
